Law Enforcement Officers Plan for Safe Snowmobiling

Law enforcement officers attending the snowmobiling training program included (from l to r): Sgt. Sheriffs James Voutour (Niagara County) and Farris Heiman (Wyoming County) participated, along with law enforcement colleagues from the New York State Police, the New York State Park Police, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Orleans County Sheriff's Office, Erie County Sheriff's Office, the NYS DEC Forest Rangers, in a training and planning program to promote safe snowmobile driving on the trails throughout Western New York.  Members of the New York State Snowmobiler Association also participated in the program.


State Police statistics show that there were 55 snowmobile accidents in Western New York last year, 47 resulting in injuries and 3 in fatalities.  Sheriffs, State Police and the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation work hard each year to enforce safety laws so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable snowmobiling season.  Law enforcement officers pay special attention to speeding and alcohol violations, and work with snowmobile clubs so that everyone knows and understands safety rules and regulations.
