Sheriff David Gould began his police career in 1970 when he joined the New York State Police. He spent his entire 34 year State Police career in the Troop “E” area, retiring in 2004. The next two years were spent as a Special Investigator for the Seneca County District Attorney’s Office. In November 2006, Dave won the election for the position of Cayuga County Sheriff and on January 1, 2007 became the County’s Chief Law Enforcement Officer, leading an Office of nearly 200 Sheriff’s employees. One of Sheriff Gould’s goals was to open two substations, one in the North end and one in the South end of the 700 square miles of Cayuga County. This goal was accomplished by opening the Moravia Substation in July and the Cato Substation in October. Another goal is to work toward getting the Law Enforcement, Custody Department, Civil Department and Marine Department all accredited. Sheriff Gould has instituted and documented 38 new initiatives since January 1st, 2007, and has also obtained all new weapons for his department. Cayuga County has a population of 82,000 people and covers 700 square miles. The County seat is located in the City of Auburn.
