Sheriff Gary T. Maha started his law enforcement career in 1967 as a Deputy Sheriff with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Batavia, New York. Prior to becoming Sheriff in 1988, he served as a Deputy Sheriff-Road Patrol, Senior Investigator, Captain and Chief Deputy. Sheriff Maha holds an Associates Degree in Police Science and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice Administration. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar and numerous law enforcement and corrections training courses. Sheriff Maha is Chairman of the Genesee County Traffic Safety Board and a past President of the Kiwanis Club of Batavia. Sheriff Maha is a member of the New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation Council, the New York State 9-1-1 Board, the New York State Executive Committee on Counter Terrorism and serves as First Vice-President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. Sheriff Maha also serves as Vice-Chair of the National Sheriffs’ Association’s Criminal Justice/Technology Committee. Genesee County has a population of approximately 60,060 and an area of 501 square miles.
