Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn began his career with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in 1976, as a Deputy Sheriff-Trainee. He was subsequently promoted to the position of part-time Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Parks and Marine Patrol Unit. He was selected to attend the Monroe County Police Academy in 1978, as the sole representative from the Sheriff’s Office. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1983 and to the rank of Lieutenant in 1986. In January of 1988, he was appointed to the position of Undersheriff by then-Sheriff Andrew P. Meloni. He was subsequently elected to the position of Sheriff and began his four year term as the chief law enforcer of Monroe County on January 1, 2002 and is now serving in his second term. The Sheriff is responsible for over 1,200 sworn and civilian personnel and operates on a budget of over 100 million dollars. Sheriff O’Flynn earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Roberts Wesleyan College. He is Chairman of the Operating Practices Board of the 911 Emergency Communications Center and he is on the Board of Directors of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), Lifespan and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Foundation. Sheriff O’Flynn currently serves as Treasurer of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. Monroe County has a population of 736,000 and covers an area of 721 square miles.
