Sheriff
Bates, who is serving his third term, brings 45 years of criminal
justice experience to the Office. Following a 22 year career with the
NY State Police, Sheriff Bates was elected Coroner in his first attempt
at political office. While serving as Coroner, he was appointed
Undersheriff. Eleven years in that position provided the experience and
knowledge to be an effective Sheriff. Ensuring the county’s safety and
well-being remains a primary focus. Sheriff Bates feels that is best
accomplished by providing competent, well-trained and experienced
personnel in all divisions, as well as continuing to offer pro-active,
effective programs.
He has brought Schoharie County into the 21st century with a
state-of-the-art E911 System. Sheriff Bates recognizes the importance
of ever-changing technology and is committed to assuring that
Communications, Road Patrol, and the Jail Divisions receive the
technology needed to operate effectively and efficiently, and to keep
up with the changing times. The Sheriff is a graduate of Morrisville
College, the New York State Police Academy and the
National Sheriffs’ Institute.
Schoharie County has a population of 34,000 and an area of 624 square miles, which includes 16 towns and 6 Villages.
