Kevin Wells joined the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office in 1984. He worked his way up through the ranks, first as a patrol officer, a juvenile officer, the Sheriff’s Offices first DARE Officer and then he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Then, in 1999, newly elected Sheriff Gary Jarvis named Wells Undersheriff. Upon Jarvis’s retirement, Kevin Wells was elected Sheriff in November of 2007.

While serving as Undersheriff, he played a critical role in the planning the new St. Lawrence County Jail. That facility will open in the Fall of 2008 and will have 164 beds.
Sheriff Wells is a member and is a 1981 graduate of SUNY Canton with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a 1983 graduate of SUNY Utica-Rome with a Bachelor’s of Professional Studies Degree in Criminal Justice. The Sheriff is a certified Police Instructor and Evaluator. He has received hundreds of hours of law enforcement training with numerous certifications over his career. In addition, he is a certified in Voice Stress Analysis.

St. Lawrence County has a population of 110,000 residents and consists of 2,840 square miles – the 3rd largest county in the area east of the Mississippi River.
