Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appointed Edgar Domenech as Sheriff of the City of New York, effective January 3, 2011.
Prior to his appointment as Sheriff of New York City in January, Edgar had more than 25 years of leadership experience in Federal law enforcement. A strong-high, high energy executive, he has the solid foundation of leadership and organizational management expertise essential for leading complex organizations with critical missions. He served as Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, during which he built effective relationships with myriad Federal, State, and local law enforcement organizations to share intelligence, share technology, and improve public safety.
Offering a rare blend of strategic thinking and quick action, Edgar contributed significantly to ATF during his tenure there. During his three-year term as Deputy Director and COO of the Bureau, he spearheaded better training on arson and explosives for a variety of other law enforcement agencies, expanded multi-jurisdictional investigations on tobacco trafficking, and developed the Violent Crime Impact Team concept to remove violent offenders from affected communities. As Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Division, Domenech oversaw ATF responsibilities during the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.
Edgar’s exceptional track record for change management, effective policy development, creation of innovative programs, and coalition building is based on his philosophy of total enterprise engagement in ATF’s critical mission. He is known for his ability for quickly producing actionable products, fearless and clear-headed decision making, and effective media relations.
Edgar Domenech received his MS, National Security Strategy, from the National War College in June, 2010 with a focus on creating strategic frameworks to better examine and address security issues. His Bachelor of Arts from John Jay College is in Government Public Administration.
He was a member of the United States Government Senior Executive Service. Active in the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Senior Executive Institute, and the Treasury Executive Institute, Domenech is also a recipient of the Presidential Meritorious Rank Award. Edgar is a native of New York City, and currently enjoys biking and exercising with his wife, Claire.
As the Sheriff of the City of New York, Sheriff Domenech is the City’s chief civil law enforcement officer, enforcing court orders, mandates and edicts received from Civil, Supreme, Housing, Family and Small Claims Courts. He also oversees the collection of debt owed to the City from judgments filed by the Environmental Control Board, Parking Violations and other administrative tribunals. The Sheriff is also responsible for municipal security and protection of senior officials throughout the City.
New York City has a population of over 8 million and an area of 321.8 square miles.
