The Sheriffs' Association conducts or supports numerous projects designed to educate the public about the Office of Sheriff and about law enforcement issues in general. Some of those programs are explained below.
NATIONAL POLICE OFFICER'S WEEK: Annually during National Police Officers' Week - the third week of May - the Sheriffs' Association promotes the role of the Sheriff as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the County with a major exhibit on the Empire State Plaza Concourse in Albany. The exhibit, which includes displays and live demonstrations by Sheriffs Deputies from around the State, attracts thousands of visitors, including most State Legislators, the Governor and his staff, and Justices of the State's highest courts.
NEW YORK STATE SHERIFFS' WEEK: Traditionally, the Governor, at the request of the New York State Sheriffs' Association, Inc., declares the second week in September as New York State Sheriffs' Week in recognition of the Office of Sheriff as the oldest local public office in the State. Sheriffs throughout the State celebrate this occasion on the local level, with events that draw attention to the varied operations and the advanced law enforcement techniques and resources of the Sheriff's Office. The New York State Sheriffs' Association, Inc. supports Sheriffs' Week through its role as liaison to the Governor's Office, and as distributor of statewide news releases regarding Sheriffs' Week events, and as a resource for Sheriffs planning special events in their county during this special week.
EMPIRE STATE SHERIFF MAGAZINE: The Association publishes a periodic magazine, which serves as a vehicle of communication with, and as an education tool for, the Association's Honorary Members. It is a non-commercial publication, having no advertising, which spotlights the important work of Sheriffs Offices around the State.
