Sheriff Dave Gould began his police career in 1970 when he joined the New York State Police. He spent his entire 34 year state police career in the Troop “E” area, retiring in 2004. The next two years were spent as a Special Investigator for the Seneca County District Attorney’s Office. In November 2006 Dave won the election for the position of Cayuga County Sheriff and on January 1, 2007 became the Chief Law Enforcement Officer for nearly 200 Sheriff’s employees. One of Sheriff Gould’s goals is to open two substations, one in the North end and one in the South end of the 700 square miles of Cayuga County. Another goal is to work toward getting the Law Enforcement, Custody Department, Civil Department and Marine Department all accredited.
Sheriff Gould has chosen Jim Stowell to be his Undersheriff and James Taber to be his Jail Administrator.
Cayuga County has a population of 82,000 people and covers 700 square miles.
