Sheriff Edward Reilly served in the New York City
Correctional System for twenty-seven years before being appointed Sheriff of
Nassau County in February of 2000. He began as a Correction Officer and
steadily rose through the ranks. In February of 1993, he was named Warden of
two New York City Department of Correction facilities. This responsibility
included all of the administration, personnel actions, inmate programs,
security and care, custody and control of all inmates. In 1994, Reilly was
named Chief of Custody Management when the inmate population rose to 19,000,
housed in 16 separate facilities located in the five boroughs of New York
City. Less than a year later, he was promoted to Chief of Management and
Planning. Four months later, Reilly was named Chief of the Department,
commanding 11,421 Uniformed Correction Officers. The Sheriff graduated from
Fordham University with a Bachelor and Masters Degree. He has been an
Adjunct Professor at both John Jay College and St. John’s University. Nassau
County has a population of 1,300,000 and an area of 300 square miles. |
