Sheriff
Bates, who is serving his third term, brings 44 years of criminal justice
experience to the Office. Following a 22-year career with the NY State
Police, Sheriff Bates was elected Coroner in his first attempt at political
office. While serving as Coroner, he was appointed Undersheriff. Eleven
years in that position provided the experience and knowledge to be an
effective Sheriff.
Ensuring the county’s safety and well-being, remains a primary focus.
Sheriff Bates feels this is best accomplished by providing competent,
well-trained and experienced personnel in all divisions, as well as
continuing to offer pro-active, effective programs.
He has brought Schoharie County into the 21st century with a
state-of-the-art E911 System. Sheriff Bates recognizes the ever-changing
technology and is committed to assuring that Communications, Road Patrol,
and the Jail Divisions receive that tool to operate effectively and
efficiently, and keep up with the changing times.
The Sheriff is a graduate of Morrisville College, the New York State Police
Academy and the National Sheriffs’ Institute. Schoharie County has a
population of 34,000 and an area of 624 square miles, which includes 16
towns and 6 Villages. |
