Sheriff
Tweddell has served as Sheriff of Steuben County since 1999 following two
years as Undersheriff. He started his 40 year law enforcement career with
the New York State Police. He has received extensive training in hostage
negotiations, police supervision and countering threats of terrorism as well
as working in all aspects of law enforcement from road patrol, conducting
extended and intensive investigations in organized crime and high-level drug
operations, to supervising the State Police Investigative Unit in Steuben
County. Steuben County has a population of 100,000 and encompasses 1,409
square miles. In 2003, Sheriff Tweddell was elected to and serves on the
National Sheriffs’ Association’s Board of Directors. He also serves as
Secretary/Treasurer of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association.
Steuben County has a population of 98,726 and has an area of 1,392.6 square
