Sheriff
Peter Meskill is a career public servant. At a young age, he became active
as an Emergency Responder with the Trumansburg Volunteer Fire Department. He
twice served as President of that outstanding fire company. He served in
various elected capacities in the Village of Trumansburg, before being
elected to the Tompkins County Board of Representatives. A year after
joining the County Board, Meskill was named Chairman of the Public Safety
Committee. In that capacity, he played an important role in planning and
implementing an enhanced 911 System for the County. He also worked to get
more Deputy Sheriffs working out in the field. In 1998, he decided to take a
more direct hand in the Sheriff’s Office operations, and ran successfully
for that office. The Sheriff holds a Degree in Business Administration and
has attended several public safety schools and seminars. Tompkins County has
a population of 94,000 and an area of 491 square miles. |
